How to water start strapless

Riding strapless looks like a lot of fun both in the waves and also in the flat water. And it doesn’t just look like that it also feel like fun too! For me having a nice flat water session with my skim board or smaller waves with my surfboard is bringing all the joy and fun back, and specially the surfing into the kitesurfing. I feel much more joy from learning a new strapless trick and if its only a kick flip with my skim board or a 180 with a surfboard, then plowing back and forth with the TT and going big. My knees and my lower back are also much happier after a long session of strapless.

But first thing is first and we will start with water starts!

Here are a few of tips on water starting on strapless skim/surf board.

- Train first in the shallow flat water
- Use grip pads. If you use wax make sure it’s properly waxed, because too little wax might be slippery in the beginning
- Make sure your feet are not to close together. Have a wide stance on the board
- Your heels need to be on the edge closer to you, so the board is tilted towards you. Whole foot needs to be one the board, not just the heels.
- Pull the bar just slightly in so you have a little bit of power and you move downwind which will make the board glue to your feet
- Keep your knees bent like on TT
- Don’t dive the kite as hard as you may during the water start with a twin tip
- Have fun!!

Kitsurfing lessons for kids

When I got my first kid for student, I was a bit worried. He was 12 and weighing around 35 kilos. Smallest kite we had was 6m Cabrinha Crossbow and wind was 15 knots. Deep water conditions with beach break. Flying on land went really smooth as the student was following all instructions and performing every exercise with extreme precision.

Moving into the water was a bit more of a challenge since the beach breaks were bigger than the student. But you grab the student with one hand and fly the kite with the other and you are in business. All and all teaching kids was far easier then teaching most of the adults, since they are doing everything exactly as you tell them. Sure its easy for them to loose focus, so you just need to keep them busy and entertained all the time. That means short repetitions of each exercise. And switch them around. But once you get them hooked there is no going back.

Teaching kitesurfing in Vietnam

November 2011 to March 2012 I spent teaching kitesurfing in Mui Ne Vietnam. I was part of the amazing C2Sky instructor team. The conditions for teaching are one of the hardest I have experienced so far. Deep water, strong gusty winds, narrow beach, crowded and on some days big beach breaks. And party life was also one of the hardest I have ever seen! It was hard to combine both, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. After teaching in Mui Ne I am ready to teach anywhere now, because I think its one of the hardest spots for teaching.

It was so far the best teaching and kiting experience of my life. I have logged over 200 hours of teaching. Bought a surfboard and been riding strapless for the last 2 and a half months. So coming back now with lots of teaching experience and riding strapless all the time.

How to start with strapless kitesurfing

Ever since I started with kitesurfing I wanted to go strapless. First I bought a skim board more then 1 year ago but I did what everyone does, I was just using it when the conditions were too bad for my twin tip. It took a while but it finally hit me, how can you learn to ride strapless if you only practice now and then and even then its bad conditions. So when I booked my 4 month trip to Vietnam one of my goals was to get on with strapless riding. But then again I got there and twin tip was out every day. Until I cut my foot in a place that i couldn’t put in the straps anymore. Which proved to be a kick in the but I needed! From then on (4 months now) I haven’t been back on my twin tip. After 3 weeks on my skim board I bought a used 6’2″ surfboard. First thing I did was remove the straps and went out.

So here I was thinking putting writing my learning process from the first strapless water starts, to the jumps and riding bigger and bigger waves. Both on my skim board and surfboard. Next time I will start with water starts and riding upwind.

Kitesurfing Vietnam

In November 2011 we packed our bags and kites and boards (all 80 kilos of them) and started our 4 month kitesurfing trip in Vietnam. Stockholm -> Istanbul-> Saigon->Mui Ne. After 19 hours on the plane we only had 5 hours bus ride to Mui Ne. The kitesurfing meka in south east Asia.

First look of the place was amazing. Palm trees, huge sandy beach, good wind, and everything was super cheap. But after you stay for a longer time and see under the surface you realize that the sand on the beach is dirty as hell (full of human shit among other stuff) and the water even worse. You see dead piglets, dogs, ducks, … and other creatures floating around all the time. The wind is super gusty. And even though everything is super cheap you cant really enjoy it since they will bring you wrong food and drinks most of the time.

If you can get pass that you can start enyojing your stay in Mui Ne or Vietnam in general.
